Happy World Water Day! World Water Day occurs every year on March 22nd. World Water Day was started because someone recommended at the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development that there should be a day to celebrate fresh water. The first World Water Day was on March 22nd, 1993. One aspect of fresh water is featured every year. This year, the theme of World Water Day is Water and Food Security. Every 20 seconds, a child dies because of a water-related illness. Millions of people are without clean water. The theme is Water and Food security because water is one of the main factors for food production, and without clean water, we won’t have very much food either. Click here to learn more about World Water Day: www.unwater.org/worldwaterday/

Here are some things you can do for the 2012 (Water and Food Security) World Water Day:

Donate to a water charity that fights for everyone to have access to clean water

Raise awareness through social networking sites

Tell your friends and family

Don’t waste fresh water!

Hey guys, Ava is helping write this post today because she went to the Dominican for a week and wanted to share what has been going on. You have most likely seen pictures she took recently on the website. Here is an idea of what people in Dominican have to live with and why we shouldn’t take our tap water for granted.

Here in North America, we take our tap water for granted. In other countries around the world, they can’t even drink their tap water due pollution and bacteria. One of these countries is the Dominican Republic. They are surrounded by a beautiful, clean, salt-water ocean. Although it is clean, you can not drink salt-water. When I went to the hotel, there is a sign beside all sinks saying, “Do not drink any of the tap water or wash your face with it.” I think that sign was there because they have a limited supply of clean water and need to prioritize the uses of this water prevent a shortage. We should be thankful that we have a large supply of clean water that we can drink, and don’t have to worry about running out to the same extent that they do. We have to be careful because once we run out of water, we can’t get it back as quickly. We need to stop wasting water and appreciate how much we have.
